Foreign Languages Department prepares students for an increasingly interdependent global society by fostering professional competence. This competence is developed using pedagogies and curricula that promote language both as an instrument for communication and as a window through which students can explore, analyze and understand cultural communities and connections. English, German and French languages are taught at the department for the students of 1st-2nd years of study, for PhD students. Students and young scientists are assisted in preparation for participation in international scientific conferences held in Ukraine and abroad.

Research interests of the department: problems of bilingual terminology, translation of professional literature and teaching language for specific purposes, including pedagogical and methodological aspects of teaching a foreign language to students, formation of professional culture; pedagogical aspects of professional culture formation; student-centered approach to the development of foreign language courses, linguodidactic features of a foreign language for specific purposes, modern approaches to teaching foreign languages for specific purposes: specific features of student motivation.

Our mission is to help students not only become proficient in a foreign language, but to think critically about the world and immerse themselves in new cultures. We’ll encourage them to travel, study abroad, conduct research and embrace diversity.

Departments of Foreign Philology

English Language Department trains specialists under three study programs: “Secondary education (English language and foreign literature)”, “Secondary education (Language and literature (English, German)”), 035 Philology “English language and literature” of bachelor’s and master’s educational levels of higher education. The department is a team of like-minded academics with a high level of scientific and practical training and extensive experience. Studied theoretical and applied educational components are based on modern achievements and meet labor market demands. The department carries out active scientific work with the involvement of students. Invited foreign specialists are involved in the teaching of some disciplines.

German Language Department of Kamianets-Podilskyi Ivan Ohiienko National University is a center that carries out scientific research and innovative educational activities for the training of highly qualified specialists of the language profile. Academic staff provides professional teaching of the German language at the first (bachelor’s) and second (master’s) levels of higher education for specialties 014 Secondary education (Language and foreign literature (German), 014 Secondary education (Language and foreign literature (English), 014 Secondary education (Language and foreign literature (Polish), 035. Philology, specialization 035. 041 Germanic languages and literatures (translation included), first – English.

Active cooperation with the academic community of higher education institutions of Ukraine, foreign educational and scientific institutions, participation in international projects and events fosters high level of German language teaching, taking into account the latest achievements in the field of foreign language teaching methods and German studies. Students and academics participate in projects and competitions of various levels, in academic mobility programs (DAAD, ERASMUS +KA107). With the support of the Goethe Institut, students successfully complete the international German language teacher training program “DLL: Deutsch Lehren Lernen” and receive international certificates. All this ensures their professional realization and increase of competence level.

Slavic Philology and General Linguistics Department is a graduating department for specialty 014 Secondary Education (Language and Foreign Literature (Polish), provides teaching of Polish studies, as well as general philology disciplines for all specialties of the Faculty. It consists of 1 Doctor of Science, Professor, 3 PhDs, Associate Professors. Native speakers – teachers from the Republic of Poland have been working at the department for 5 years under the program “Lecturers”.

Students constantly participate in joint Ukrainian-Polish cultural and educational events, international youth programs, language competitions, Olympiads, achieving significant success, undergo pedagogical practice in Polish educational institutions, study abroad under the Erasmus+ program. Two of our graduates, M. Poberezhna and D. Bekeshko, are studying for master’s degrees at Polish universities. We rejoice at the successes of our graduates, keep in close contact with them, and they, in turn, express sincere gratitude for the high level of training provided by the department.

Germanic Languages and Foreign Literature Department has a long history and glorious tradition that we preserve and multiply today. The powerful potential of the academic staff, upgraded material supply, modern innovative learning technologies have added to its growing into one of the most reputable departments of the Faculty of Foreign Philology in Kamianets-Podilskyi Ivan Ohiienko National university. The department employs 1 Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor and 4 PhDs in Philological sciences, Associate Professors.

It is the graduating department for students at the first (bachelor’s) level of higher education of the Faculty of Foreign Philology in the field of 035 Philology, specialization 035.041 Germanic languages and literatures (translation included), study program “English language and literature”.

The priorities of the Germanic Languages and Foreign Literature Department extend to all directions of the department’s activities: personnel policy, educational and scientific activities, international cooperation, educational work and informational and methodological support of the educational process in accordance with the development strategies in Kamianets-Podilskyi Ivan Ohiienko National University.

List of specialties

First (bachelor’s) level of higher education

Training in this specialty is implemented within the study program: “Secondary education (Language and literature (English, German)”. Graduates can work as English and German language teachers and foreign literature teachers in general secondary education institution. The program is aimed at training qualified and competitive teachers-philologists, forming psychological and pedagogical competences necessary for the teacher’s professional activity in combination with thorough philological knowledge. Pedagogical practice allows to qualitatively prepare future teachers for professional activity.

The study program of the specialty “Secondary education (Language and literature (Polish, English)” involves learning Polish “from scratch”, improving and deepening knowledge of English. Since the university involves foreigners in the educational process, students have the opportunity to work with native speaker teachers, which significantly increases the effectiveness of education. Students participate in youth exchanges, language schools, international competitions, and those activities expand their horizons, give them valuable experience and acquaintances. Knowledge acquired by our students at the first (bachelor) level of higher education allows them to continue their studies at the master’s degree in educational institutions of Ukraine and Poland. In addition, we encourage young people to self-actualize in an active university community, offer to join the work of language circles and clubs, theater studio.

The study program “Secondary education (Language and literature (German, English) of the first (bachelor’s) level of higher education involves the formation of professional competences of future foreign languages and foreign literature teachers (German, English). Using the latest technologies, teaching and learning methods, a professional approach to the study of foreign languages and literature, the use of modern textbooks in the educational process, oriented on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, we train highly qualified specialists – teachers of foreign languages (German, English) and foreign literature, able to find a job successfully.

Study program “English Language and Literature” is aimed at training specialists of the first (bachelor’s) level of higher education in the specialty 035 Philology with specialization 035.041 Germanic languages and literatures (translation included), first – English. The program is complex and involves the formation of philological knowledge and skills in a combination of their linguistic, literary and translation components, which allows graduates to work as philologist researcher, linguist, and translator. The program provides training application of acquired abilities and skills in the course of three-stage practice, which includes translation activities. The study program is student-centered, forms an individual educational trajectory of students through the possibility of choosing elective disciplines, scientific circles, courseworks, which includes the acquisition of social skills and the use of academic freedom. Within the program, students and academic staff can participate in various domestic and international projects.

Second (master’s) level of higher education:

Graduates work as academic staff, English language and foreign literature teachers in general secondary education institution. The program offers the acquisition of the necessary psychological-pedagogical competencies and solid linguistic and literary knowledge. Long two-stage pedagogical practice ensures the formation of professional skills and abilities in real situations of educational activity. Study program provides for the implementation of research tasks in the field of English studies and methods of teaching English.

The implementation of the study program “Secondary education (German language and foreign literature) of the second (master’s) level of higher education involves training of highly qualified German language and foreign literature teachers in general secondary education institution, who are able to apply traditional and innovative approaches to the organization of the educational process in general secondary education institutions, conduct research in the field of German language and foreign literature teaching methods. The program offers opportunities for pedagogical, methodical, scientific, and personal growth of students in the context of a student-centered educational process by involving them in participation in scientific and practical conferences, seminars, scientific forums of various levels, meetings with leading specialists in the field of philology and foreign languages teaching methods, experienced teachers of general secondary education institutions, to improve foreign language training during language clubs (StartDeutsch Schule) and within international academic mobility programs (DAAD, ERASMUS +KA107).

Third (educational and scientific) level of higher education

The study program is aimed at the preparation of Doctors of Philosophy, and provides the formation of competences necessary for the implementation of research activities, teaching work, analytical work, scientific consulting in the field of philological sciences.
