The Educational and Research Institute of Ukrainian Philology and Journalism began its history in 1918, the birthday of the Kamianets-Podilskyi Ivan Ohiienko National University.

Over the century, the team of the Educational and Research Institute established itself as a powerful educational, research, enlightening and cultural center. Thousands of institute graduates became well-known teachers, scientists, professors, journalists, employees of the state administration system, well-known public figures.

Nowadays, the Educational and Scientific Institute trains highly qualified teachers of Ukrainian language and literature, as well as English language and highly qualified philologist and journalists. There is a training school for future professionals that meets national requirements and European standards of classical higher education.

Departments of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Ukrainian Philology and Journalism

The establishment of the Ukrainian language Department is connected with the ascetic activity of professor Ivan Ohiienko since the opening of the Kamianets-Podilskyi State University in October 1918. As an independent educational and research unit, the Ukrainian language Department began its activities in 1970. The department has a scientific research center for linguistic studies, a scientific school “Topical issues of Ukrainian linguistics and linguistic didactics” and an educational and reasearch laboratory of dialectological studies.

Ukrainian language Department is a friendly team of highly professional scientists. The teaching staff takes care of the quality content of knowledge in Ukrainian philology and linguistic didactics for students at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor of philosophy higher education levels. The mission of the Department is highly effective activity in the national and international educational and scientific space in order to meet the educational needs of the individual, society, and the state to ensure the functioning of Ukrainian language as the state language.

The history of Ukrainian Literature Department begins with the establishment of the Kamianets-Podilskyi State University in October 1918. The formation and development of philological science, in particular literary science, is associated with the names of the first rector Ivan Ohiienko, the first dean of the history and philology faculty, later the professor of the Ukrainian University of Prague, Leonid Biletskyi, the Head of the Slavic Studies Department, Mykhailo Drai-Khmara.

Nowadays, the Department of the History of Ukrainian Literature and Comparative Studies is one of the flagships of philological thought development in Ukraine. The multi-disciplinary activity of the Department is provided by its divisions, such as the studies of Ohiienko research center, educational and research laboratories of ethnology and literary local history, which are authoritative centers of folkloristic, cultural, ethnological, and local history studies in the region.

An important stage of the Department’s development is systematic cooperation with the literary and pedagogical community of domestic and foreign educational and academic institutions. Foreign partners of the Department are the Ukrainian Free Academy of Sciences in the USA (president A. Kip), Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin (professor I. Nabytovych), Georg August University of Göttingen in Göttingen (Germany). Scientific conferences of the international, all-Ukrainian and regional levels are held through the efforts of the Department.

The Department of History of Ukrainian Literature and Comparative Studies is actively involved in cultural and educational activities. Since 2015, the student theater-studio “Estel” has been operating at the Department, the foundation of which is timed to the anniversaries of the coryphaeus of the Ukrainian stage – M. Kropyvnytskyi, M. Starytskyi, I. Karpenko-Karyi. Today, the repertoire of the student theater troupe, which has gained high recognition from fans, includes such classics as “Forest Song” by Lesia Ukrainka, “Stolen Happiness” by I. Franko, “Martyn Borulya” by I. Karpenko-Karyi, “Chasing Two Hares” and ” Gypsy Aza” by M. Starytskyi, “Valse melancolique” by O. Kobylianska.

Since the establishment of the Department, its teachers have been working on the implementation of the collective theme “Text as the main unit of communication”. The research is carried out in the journalistic direction, the essence of which is revealed in the study of the text as a means of mass information. Attention is focused on the study of the ways and means of information saturation of the text. Also important areas of research are the study of genre specificity of journalistic texts of the 19th and 20th centuries and in modern mass media, their permanent features and genesis of changes.

Oleksandr Volkovynskyi heads the international integration project for students, masters, and post-graduate students ” Open Mind School”, supervises the ongoing international symposium “Object and subject of humanitarian knowledge” and participates in the work of the scientific-methodical commission on journalism and information of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.

The Department of Journalism has an educational laboratory of multimedia tools and media design, which is equipped with modern teaching tools for mastering the principles of work in the field of press, radio and television journalism.

The Department maintains close scientific ties with higher education institutions of foreign countries, including: Szczecin University (Poland); Jan Kohanowski Świętokrzyska Academy (Kielce, Poland); University of Warsaw (Poland); University in Brno (Czech Republic); Jan Jan Kochanowski University of Humanities and Sciences in Kielce (Poland); Academy of Technology and Humanities in Bielsko-Biala (Poland, Bielsko-Biała).

List of specialties

The first (bachelor) level of higher education

The educational and professional program trains qualified teachers who have subject knowledge of the Ukrainian language and literature, pedagogy, psychology and teaching methods. During the training process of the students, attention is focused on the ability to solve tasks and practical problems related to the organization of the educational process in the Ukrainian language and literature in general secondary educational institutions (level of basic secondary education). The peculiarity of the educational and professional program lies in the tradition of training teachers of the Ukrainian language and literature at the Historico-Philological (language-literature) Faculty since the beginning of Kamianets-Podilskyi Ukrainian State University (1918).

Educational and professional program provides the training of Ukrainian language and literature teachers and English teachers, who are able to solve complex specialized tasks and practical problems related to the organization of the educational process in general secondary educational institutions (level of basic secondary education). The creative approach, the scientific and linguistic didactic basis of the educational process guarantees a high level of training of qualified philologists who are able to introduce the latest linguistic, literary and pedagogical ideas into the learning process of general secondary education students.

The aim of the educational program is to prepare qualified philologists with an active civic position, competitive for European and Euro-Atlantic integration, capable of solving complex specialized tasks and practical problems in the field of philology (Ukrainian linguistics, literary studies). Attention is paid to activities related to the analysis, creation and evaluation of written and oral texts of various genres and styles, the organization of successful interpersonal, intercultural and mass communication.

The program is focused on the theory and practice of social communication, taking into account the current state of media industry development and regional media specifics. A peculiarity of the educational program is its focus on regional and hyperlocal media. Completion of educational editorial, production professional and production pre-diploma internships in the media, cooperation with regional media organizations, focus on training a universal journalist, ready to work both in regional mini-editorial office of media organizations and in Internet media.

The second (master's) level of higher education

The educational and professional program trains erudite and competitive specialists – teachers of the Ukrainian language and literature, who possess the fundamental theoretical base of professional disciplines, the methodology of scientific research, and modern information technologies. After completing their studies, higher education graduates are able to solve problems related to the organization of the educational process in Ukrainian language and literature in general secondary educational institutions (high school/specialized secondary education).

The main aim of the program is to provide training of qualified specialists in the field of social communications, who have extensive knowledge of the theory and practice of modern mass communication media, the latest information and communication technologies and are capable of scientific research and innovation activities.

Postgraduate studies in this specialty have an extensive and ancient history. Graduates of postgraduate study – PhD in Philology who successfully work in various higher education institutions and the Academy of Sciences both in Ukraine and abroad. The ability to solve complex philological problems of a professional and research nature, a deep rethinking of scientific linguistic and literary theories, and conducting one’s own relevant scientific research is what distinguishes the applicants for the third level of education “Doctor of Philosophy”.
